Short answer: A windshield that has cracked across, or is spidered or broken through, has to be replaced. It can’t be repaired. Because windshields are laminated, the glass usually stays in one piece, but it’s weaker and can be harder to see through. If your view is blocked or there’s a hole in the glass, don’t drive: we can come to you.
Why a windshield usually doesn’t shatter
Windshields are made of laminated glass: two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. When the glass cracks, the interlayer holds the pieces together, which is why a badly cracked windshield usually stays in place. Most side and rear windows are tempered glass, which breaks into small pieces instead, although some vehicles also use laminated glass in the front door windows.
Why a cracked windshield is more than a cosmetic issue
The main risks are:
- Reduced visibility: cracks can distort your view, create glare from sunlight or headlights, and make pedestrians, vehicles, or road hazards harder to see.
- Loss of structural integrity: the windshield is a structural component of the vehicle. Significant damage can reduce its ability to perform as designed during a collision or rollover.
- Passenger-airbag performance: on many vehicles, the windshield helps support proper deployment of the passenger-side airbag. A compromised windshield or improper installation can affect that system.
- Cracks can spread suddenly: heat, cold, vibration, potholes, slamming doors, and normal body flex can turn a small crack into a much larger one.
- ADAS problems: vehicles with forward-facing cameras may rely on the precise positioning of the windshield and camera for lane-departure warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and other driver-assistance functions. Windshield replacement may require calibration. ADAS calibration in Tampa →
- Greater chance of glass failure: modern laminated windshields generally remain together when damaged, but extensive cracking weakens the glass and makes further damage more likely.
- Inspection and legal issues: depending on the crack’s size and location, particularly when it obstructs the driver’s view, it can create a vehicle-safety or legal concern.
Why cracks keep spreading
Cracks rarely stay the same size. Heat, cold, vibration, potholes, slamming doors, and normal body flex can all make a crack grow, sometimes suddenly. That’s why a small chip can turn into a long crack, and why we recommend fixing chips early. Rock chip repair →

What replacement involves
Most replacements take 60 to 90 minutes. If your vehicle has a forward-facing camera, it will also need ADAS calibration. How long it takes → What is ADAS calibration? →

Frequently asked questions
Can a long crack be repaired?
No. We only repair rock chips the size of a quarter or smaller. A crack of any length needs a full windshield replacement.
Will a cracked windshield fall apart?
Windshields are made of laminated glass, two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer, so a cracked windshield usually stays in one piece. But a crack weakens it, and it should be replaced.
Can you come to me if my windshield is too damaged to drive?
Yes. Mobile service is available across the greater Tampa Bay area with no call-out fees. If your view is blocked or the glass is broken through, don’t drive — call us and we’ll come to you.
Does insurance cover a cracked windshield?
Florida Statute 627.7288 generally prohibits a deductible for covered windshield damage under comprehensive coverage. We handle the claim for you.
